Beyond the Hype: What AI Really Means for the Future of Work

Due to advent of Artificially Intelligent Chatbots like ChatGPT, people are worried that their jobs might be in danger. A survey by PwC found that over 70% of workers believe that AI will significantly change the way they work in the next five years. The same PwC survey found that while 37% of workers are concerned about the impact of AI on their job security, 56% believe that AI will help them be more efficient and productive in their jobs. But, the real question is: Will AI really impact the job market?

The Problem

There is no doubt that AI and automation will certainly have a significant impact on the job market. Though, some jobs might be eliminated, still new ones will merge, especially in the field of AI and automation. For example, tasks like data entry, customer service are already being automated. But, tasks that require emotional intelligence, creativity and complex-problem solving skills are less likely to be automated in future.

No Need to Worry

ChatGPT can surely help you with small tasks, like explaining about some small bug in your code, writing the code for some leetcode problem but it certainly can't do some big task like creating a complete project based on your idea, or fixing some major bug in your project or adding a new complex feature to your project. It can help you but can't do the whole task by itself.

Infact, AI and automation would create new job opportunities in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. AI might even lead to creation of new industries that we can't even imagine yet. According to a report by McKinsey Global Institute, while some jobs may be lost due to automation, others will be created, with the potential for up to 50 million new jobs to be created worldwide by 2030.

But, the same McKinsey report found that, up to 375 million workers may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills by 2030 due to automation. There would certainly be some kind of disruption in the job market, but it is unlikely that it will completely eat up human jobs. Even though some jobs might be eliminated, new ones would emerge in their place. The key for employees is to stay updated with the latest trends in technology and not fall behind.

For those who think, we might have human like robots who would be far far more intelligent than us, my suggestion to them is that STOP WATCHING TOO MUCH SCIENCE FICTION!!! , coz that would take many more years to happen.
